What is WATA?
WATA is an electrochlorination technology that produces sodium hypochlorite on site from three locally available inputs: water, salt and electricity. The solution produced is used for drinking-water chlorination and for surface and equipment disinfection.

Why produce chlorine locally instead of buying it?
Local production removes the dependency on chlorine supply chains: there is less product to transport, store and discard, and the solution is made when and where it is needed. It also gives operators control over the quality and the availability of their disinfectant.

What is the concentration of the solution produced?
All WATA devices produce a sodium hypochlorite solution at approximately 5 g/L of active chlorine. The exact volume produced per cycle depends on the device model.

Which WATA model should I choose?
The range covers four production scales: Mini-WATA (0.5 L per cycle), WATA-Standard (2 L), WATA-Plus (15 L) and Maxi-WATA (60 L). The right model depends on the daily chlorine demand of your project. The sizing assistant on the homepage and the detailed comparison table give the batch and daily figures for each device.

How much can a WATA device produce per day?
Daily figures on this site are calculated on a standard operational reference of 4 production cycles of 2 hours per day. On that basis, the devices produce from 10 g of active chlorine per day (Mini-WATA) up to 1,200 g per day (Maxi-WATA).

What consumables and reagents are needed?
Production requires salt and water. Quality control uses WataTest, the reagent that verifies the active chlorine concentration of the solution produced, and WataBlue, used to check residual chlorine in treated water. WataStab is a stabiliser for the produced solution.

How do I check that the solution produced is correct?
Each batch should be checked with WataTest before use, and the treated water checked with WataBlue. The WATA Production Log Book, available in the technical library, is designed to record production and control results.

How should the device be maintained?
Correct use and care of the electrode are essential to the lifetime of the device. The document “Five essential rules for protecting your WATA”, available in the technical library, summarises the practices to follow. Video tutorials for each model are available in the tutorials section.

How much chlorine solution do I need for my water volume?
The water treatment capacities shown on this site use a reference dose of 1 g of active chlorine per m³. Real chlorine demand depends on raw water quality, operating conditions and the residual chlorine level required. Can WATA treat any water?
Chlorination acts on microbiological contamination; it does not replace the removal of turbidity or of chemical contamination. Water with high turbidity must first be clarified or filtered. The guide on chlorine demand in drinking water, in the technical library, covers this in detail.

Can the solution be used for surface disinfection?
Yes. In healthcare facilities, the solution produced is used both for drinking-water chlorination and for surface and equipment disinfection, as part of infection prevention and control.

What power supply does a WATA device need?
Electrical requirements range from 10 W for the Mini-WATA to 888 W for the Maxi-WATA. Devices can run on grid power, on a battery or on solar energy.

Is solar operation possible?
Yes. Solar kits are available for Mini-WATA, WATA-Standard and WATA-Plus. For the Maxi-WATA, the solar configuration is designed on demand according to the site.
